Letters travel the real world at the speed of the animal you send. While they fly, other roosts can hunt them. If you want a secret, you encode it yourself. Instant chat is the opposite of this roost.

Distance is the delay
You pin a roost to a real place. When you send a letter, Carrier measures the geography between you and them, then divides that distance by the courier’s actual travel speed. A note across town on a falcon can land the same afternoon. A continent on a pigeon is a wait. A snail is a bit.
The receiver sees nothing until the animal would have arrived. No typing indicator, no instant ping. The wait is the product: a slow messaging app on purpose, not a laggy clone of SMS.
The map is a hunt
Couriers already in the sky appear on the Atlas. You can send your own animal after them. A successful intercept gives you one look at the letter — cipher and all — then the original courier continues, stamped intercepted. Reading someone else’s mail is part of the game. Hiding yours well enough that they cannot is the rest.
That is the gamified messenger layer: intercepts, hand-encoded puzzles, a roster you unlock by using the roost, and public aliases that expire unless you keep them alive.
Encode it yourself
Caesar shifts, ROT13, Atbash, A1Z26, Morse, Vigenère keywords, rail fences, XOR. You pick the scheme, you hold the key, and the other person works it out with the same tools. A cipher here is a puzzle, not a lock the app pretends to hold for you.
Aliases and post offices
A roost can sprout extra addresses on the map. Public pins are fair game for strangers. Group letters go through a post office you drop on the earth: one leg in, then a cloned courier out to every member.
Why not just text
Geography turns into time, so a nearby note lands sooner than a transatlantic one.
Encoding is a craft you share, not a setting buried in a menu.
The Atlas is a hunt: other people’s letters are fair game while they fly.
Animals, aliases, and post offices give the roost a life outside the thread.
Questions
What is Carrier?
Carrier is a slow messaging app and a gamified messenger. Delivery follows real-world distance and animal speed. Intercepts, ciphers, and unlocks are the game on top of the wait.
Is Carrier a native app?
It is a mobile-first web app. Open it in a browser; you can install it to your home screen. No App Store listing is required to start.
Is Carrier end-to-end encrypted?
No. The ciphers are puzzles. Letters are stored so they can be delivered and intercepted. Do not send anything you cannot afford another roost to read.
Is Carrier free?
Yes. Creating a roost and sending letters is free. A short list of high-tier animals is reserved for premium roosts.
